Welcome here! We are so glad you've chosen to explore children’s ministry at Niagara United Mennonite Church, here we call it Lighthouse!
Who are we, and what do we do?
We offer classes for age 3 right up to Grade 8. We will be following the “Shine On” curriculum, delivered from Menno Media. For more information on the "Shine On" curriculum, please visit: http://www.faithandliferesources.org/Curriculum/Shine/
We seek to create a positive and open atmosphere in all of our classrooms, where students feel comfortable asking questions, seeking answers, and strengthening their faith. During our large group time together, we read the story for the week, do our coin and food pantry collection before the children go to their respective classes for the lessons for the week. Classes are led by volunteers of varying ages and life experiences.
When and where do we meet?
The children will join the adults for the beginning portion of the Worship Service. During the “Children’s Moment” we will collectively sing the monthly song the children are learning. Following the song, the children will leave to head up to the 3rd floor for their time together.
We ask that parents of age 3 to grade 1 please pickup your child from the classroom at Noon. Grade 2 to 8 will be dismissed at Noon to go to their parents. If the service ends early, Lighthouse will continue until noon at which time the children will be dismissed.
Why do we meet?
We believe that church community plays a vital role in the lives of children and youth. Singing and Sunday School are opportunities to learn, to teach, and to grow as believers in Christ and as young and vital members of a greater church family. We believe that this time of gathering goes beyond the lessons that are taught and the songs that are sung. Gathering weekly as a body of believers provides a sense of security, of purpose, and of belonging. We hope that you feel this sense of security, of purpose, and of belonging as you enter through the doors of the Red Brick Church.
Called to be Servants of Christ in Our Community
At Niagara UM, we are called to be servants of Christ in our community. We aim to demonstrate this within our church community, our local community, and our broader global community. We encourage this in the younger generations during Lighthouse through:
- Children are encouraged to bring a monetary contribution towards our collection each Sunday. We will track the total collection and when enough monies are raised we will put them towards our M.C.C. project.
- We will also collect non perishable donations for our food pantry. At some times during the year, these food donations may also go to Newark Neighbours or Westview Center for Women when they send a request for
replenishment of their shelves.
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should give what they have decided in their heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver. “
~ 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
